The value of a Colonial appointment depends upon so many circumstances besides the salary that the Secretary of State often cannot judge what would be acceptable to an officer. Applicania for promotion should therefore, in their own interests, state as precisely as possible what they desire, either specifying certain appointinents, or at least mentioning the Colonies to which they would or would not he willing to go and the amount of salary which they think that they may reasonably expect,
